A new study shows that erectile dysfunction is linked to poor mental health, not just in men.
Researchers in New Zealand found that men taking a daily dose of sildenafil (known as Viagra) were twice as likely to have depression than those who took only a low dose of the medication.
In fact, the men who took a lower dose had twice the risk of depression, compared with those who took a higher dose. And the risk of depression was even lower in those taking a higher dose.

Dr. David Stoner, a professor of physiology and psychiatry at New Zealand's University of Otago, said the new study shows that erectile dysfunction is a very real problem that should be treated. He said that erectile dysfunction can have many possible causes, including the brain and nerves.
"Men with erectile dysfunction have the highest risk of depression and anxiety," he said.
The researchers looked at the brains of over 2,000 men in the study, and found that those who took the lower dose had a 70 percent greater chance of having depression than those who took only the higher dose.
"The higher dose has a lower risk of depression than the lower dose, but the risk is still elevated. I think it's important that men with erectile dysfunction are given the lowest dose, and they are able to find their libido and performance to be affected," Stoner said.
He said that erectile dysfunction is a very real problem that should be treated. "We're going to see a real improvement in mental health in the long term, and if we do see a positive change in the quality of life then we can do a lot more good."
The New Zealand study was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Sexual Medicine in New Zealand, which will take place next month.

The study was the first to test whether a lower dose of sildenafil could reduce depression in men. The research was funded by Pfizer, which manufactures Viagra and other drugs for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Cialis. When marketed asCialis Together(tadalafil 10mg), it will be a ‘P’ (pharmacy) medication, and so available ‘over the counter’ in pharmacies – see. This follows the 2018, ‘P’ classification of (sildenafil 50mg) which has been available OTC, without a prescription, since then.
